We got to my parents' house in time for Taco Soup for dinner, an egg nog trifle, and vanilla hot chocolate. We opened a couple gifts and then played a roudy game of Farkle. It was a traditional Christmas Eve. We were all together, and my brother's girlfriend was even able to be there and observe the craziness (so sorry J).
I got to thinking about all our Christmas traditions. My family is really big on traditions, especially at Christmas. I thought I would share them with you. I love to hear people's holiday customs.
-- We have Taco Soup for dinner Christmas Eve. I don't know why.
-- We always open one present on Christmas Eve. Part of this tradition is that the kids have to ask to open one and then the parents have to say, "we're not doing that this year." And then it goes back and forth for a while. Usually the present is something we can use that night, like a game, pajamas or socks, or something similar.
-- My parents always give us a time that we will open presents. We were never that family that got up at the crack of dawn to run screaming down the stairs and rip into our presents. My parents give us a time that we will begin, and then we got in a specific order and open them one by one. We hated this when we were kids, but I like it now.
-- We always read the Christmas Story before we open gifts - the one from Luke 2. My dad used to always read it, but sometimes now he let's one of us kids do it. And it has to be read from the KJV. There's just something about the beauty of that language that makes the verses stick with you.
-- We always watch The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Not the Jim Carrey one, the old cartoony one. I used to be able to quote the whole thing.
-- We usually play Farkle and Mexican Train Game. And my mom always has a bowl of Christmas candy that we pick at throughout the play time.
Marc and I:
-- We usually get one big gift together - like a vacation or a bigger technology purchase. Then we usually get each other something small to open Christmas Day.
-- Christmas Eve we always go get a summer sausage and cheese plate and enjoy it together while we wait for midnight to come and usually watch a movie.
-- We open our presents at midnight Christmas Eve/Christmas Day.
-- In the past, we've always had breakfast and the morning at our own place together. Just to enjoy each other and relaxing before we head over for the business that is Christmas with our families.
-- I try to make Marc watch one Christmas movie with me each year. Last year it was It's a Wonderful Life. This year is was Elf. It's not that I don't watch others, I just do it on my own time.
I love Christmas tradition. It's a little sad that some of the traditions we've had as a couple will have to change this year. When we have our own children, I hope to establish some great traditions for them to look forward to each year, and to look back on in the future with good memories.
Merry Christmas! Enjoy your traditions and make some new memories!
